There are lots of mic preamps available these days. What makes ours so special??

For one, it's a design that's somewhat unique in its approach. Being admirers of the fully balanced transformerless circuits found in highly acclaimed recording consoles, we chose to use a similar topology. We began with a high speed input stage that would pick up lots of detail and nuance, and then followed it with a high current output stage. Circuit headroom is plentiful, and the input stage is very difficult to clip. Because of its fully balanced design, it can handle large input signals with ease.

We also like classic transformer-based designs because of the characteristic they lend to the audio signal. Because of this, we added a 600 ohm M-6 silicon steel output transformer to give the audio a thick quality that's reminiscent of a prized vintage preamp. It's the best of both worlds in our opinion. The preamp is 500 series format and features instrument input, phase, +48vdc phantom power, and 10dB output signal pad.


Black Lion Sparrow MK2 ADC RED

The Sparrow mk2 RED (red faceplate) is also a two-channel ADC but is based on the circuitry used in our FM192: converters used on major label recordings by Maroon 5, Lady GaGa, Alison Krauss, Beyonce, and others. With a slightly different design and components than the Black Sparrow, it is in a class of its own, yet priced at only $1399. It features a low-noise, low-ripple converter circuit design and the same novel 220/270SP master clock that's found in our FM192. Rich, euphonic frequency response, shimmering top end, and fat low-end extension are all elements of this uniquely musical converter. Once you track with it, you'll find other converters sound hard, processed, or lifeless. Use it for mastering, two-track classical or jazz recordings, final mixes, or whatever application your studio needs.


Black Lion Sparrow MK2 White

Okay, sometimes it's fun to show what your design team is capable of creating. The White version of the Sparrow mk2 (white faceplate) represents a portion of our research into delta sigma conversion and clocking architecture. What sets it apart from the rest of the pack? For one thing, instead of using one converter for stereo conversion, it employs two converters in a parallel-balanced circuit to increase converter dynamic range. Add to this our unique approach to converter configuration, our 220/270SP master clock with wide Q third harmonic crystal oscillators, advanced PLL recovery, and a low noise analog path, and all of these elements together will yield the richest, clearest and fattest sounding A/D converter to ever have set foot in your recording studio. The Sparrow mk2 WHITE is $1999 and outperforms the FM192, making it among the best two-channel A/D converters available in the pro audio market today, period.

Black Lion Audio PM8 MKII

Summing in the analog domain is widely regarded as superior to mixing "in the box." The DSP required to sum individual channels into a stereo pair is prone to clock-based errors and mathematically unrelated signal artifacts, something avoided entirely by mixing down in the analog domain. While issues of channel cross-talk, thermal noise and distortion are problems faced in the analog world, these artifacts are considered more euphonic than those created in the digital domain.


Black Lion Audio AM/CHA1 EQ

We're all fans of inducto-based EQ. While it doesn't offer the surgical precision of its solid-state based gyrator circuit cousin, it has a wonderful musical quality that's very natural sounding. Typically a good inductor EQ has, in the past, been rather expensive to purchase. A classic API or Pultec-based EQ will set you back a few thousand dollars for a stereo pair.

Since we enjoy a good challenge, our goal was to develop a transformer coupled two channel inductor based EQ that could perform every bit as well as a high priced mastering-grade setup, but do it at a lower price. Since there are lots of Pultec clones out there, we wanted do develop something that was unique. We based it on what's known as a state-variable filter, and built it around custom wound Cinemag inductors. We gave it overlapping frequencies within each set of frequency bands to enable flexibility and frequency correction when needed. We use grain oriented silicon steel transformers for the input and output stages to give the audio a nice vintage character, although amorphous core Lundahl transformers are available as an option for an additional charge.

And since we have access to a few mastering-grade inductor EQ's, we tweaked and refined the circuit until we were satisfied that it was every bit as good as the expensive brands. The smooth highs, natural mids, and thick, powerful bass that only a good inductor EQ can deliver. Go ahead; shoot it out against your Neve, Massenburg, API, or Tube Tech. We think you'll be very impressed.


Black Lion Audio Auteur PreAmp

There are lots of mic preamps available these days. What makes ours so special??

For one, it's a design that's somewhat unique in its approach. Being admirers of the fully balanced transformerless circuits found in highly acclaimed recording consoles, we chose to use a similar topology. We began with a high speed input stage that would pick up lots of detail and nuance, and then followed it with a high current output stage. Circuit headroom is plentiful, and the input stage is very difficult to clip. Because of its fully balanced design, it can handle large input signals with ease.
We also like classic transformer-based designs because of the characteristic they lend to the audio signal. Because of this, we added a 600 ohm M-6 silicon steel output transformer to give the audio a thick quality that's reminiscent of a prized vintage preamp. It's the best of both worlds in our opinion. Elements of the Auteur's chassis and presentation are extremely simple, with a minimum of the fluff and promotion that tends to drive up the cost of equipment in our industry. It's housed in a 1U high 1/2 rack space chassis, and can be linked together with a second Auteur to fill up a full rack space.  If you're looking for eye candy and name recognition to dominate your equipment list, this probably isn't the preamp for you. On the other hand, if you're looking for the sort of performance normally associated with high-end designs but need to acquire it at a modest price, our mic preamp will make a wise and affordable investment for your home or project studio.


Black Lion Audio AGB Compressor

Introducing another member of the BLA product line: the AGB Compressor. An homage to the venerable Neve 33609, the AGB is a two-channel diode compressor and limiter housed in a 2U rack mount chassis. Imagine a quick, responsive, low-noise compressor with powerful control features. It does everything from smooth and easy compression to weird rhythmic clicks to funky envelope tricks. It's insanely fast and doesn't choke when you really push it. Strap it across your drum bus and smash away. Give your snare a nice, dense crack. Use it for program material. The slower attack mode is great for vocals. Whatever you use it on, youÍll find it does the job well, and without raising the noise floor.

So where does our design differ from the original? For one, the signal path is a fully balanced, opamp-based circuit. While weÍre using rotary potentiometers instead of stepped potentiometers, weÍve given you more control over things like input level and attack time. Like the original, the AGB uses input, interstage, and output transformers.
